Defining IPPC & ISPM-15

A large percentage of packing material is sourced from wood. Using wood packaging material (WPM), however, can incidentally facilitate the introduction of invasive pests.
The IPPC has worked with phytosanitary experts to combat pest risk with the regulation of WPM for international trade, also known as the International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM) 15. Heat treatment is a better alternative to chemically treating wood as the chemicals can be toxic. Heat treatment is safe and is found to save you on shipping as it lowers the weight of the packaging.
You also do not have to be concerned about heat-treated skids and pallets expiring as the treatment removes any moisture, and they remain valid as an IPPC ISPM-15 skid or pallet as long as they are not altered by the addition of other wood components.
